Lesson 5: Rural & Motorway Driving Test
Practical test on rural roads and Autobahn: acceleration and deceleration lane techniques, right-lane rule, safe distance, and roadworks.
1.1 Legal & Technical Foundations
- Route requirement: Approximately half of the driving time outside built-up areas, if possible including motorways (Autobahn) or expressways with divided carriageways and at least two lanes per direction (FeV Annex 7 No. 2.4); this rural portion must allow evaluating all key driving maneuvers including at higher speeds (FeV § 17 (4)).
- Speed guidelines: Rural roads maximum 100 km/h (StVO § 3); on the Autobahn there is no mandatory speed limit unless signposted, with 130 km/h as the advisory benchmark — in practical driving tests on clear stretches aim for 110–130 km/h (practical tip). Overtaking is strictly on the left (StVO § 5 (1)).
- Following distance: Rule of thumb "Half speedometer speed in meters" — at 100 km/h keep at least 50 m (StVO § 4 (1)) — roughly the distance between two reflector posts (Leitpfosten).
- Side clearance when overtaking cyclists outside built-up areas: at least 2.0 m (StVO § 5 (4)).
1.2 💡 Examiner Insights & Critical Traps on Rural Roads and Autobahn
- Technique for joining the Autobahn:
- 1. As soon as the front wheels hit the acceleration lane: accelerate firmly — use the entire length to reach 80–100 km/h to match flowing traffic (merging hesitantly at 40 km/h is a serious error).
- 2. Signal left → monitor interior and left exterior mirrors, spot a gap (note: a truck signalling left may be making room) → left shoulder check → merge smoothly.
- 3. ⚠️ Golden rule: The acceleration lane is built for speeding up, never for braking. If the gap remains blocked towards the end, never brake to a complete standstill at the end — maintain speed and find a gap further ahead to merge safely — do not misuse the hard shoulder (it is not part of the carriageway, StVO § 2 (1)).

- Technique for exiting the Autobahn:
- At the blue advance distance sign at 300 m (3 diagonal white stripes): signal right.
- ⚠️ The "braking too early" trap: Do not coast or brake on the main highway — brake only after you have completely entered the deceleration lane, before the exit curve.
- Duty to drive on the right (Rechtsfahrgebot, StVO § 2 (2)): On motorways and rural roads: stay in the right lane whenever it is clear. After overtaking a truck, return to the right lane only when you see the complete truck including its headlights in your interior mirror (practical tip).
- Roadwork zone traps on the Autobahn:
- Step down speed along the sign sequence (120 → 100 → 80 → 60 km/h) before passing each corresponding sign.
- Yellow lane markings temporarily override white road markings (StVO § 39 (5)) — they have full legal validity.
- Watch for the vehicle width restriction sign on the left lane (e.g. 2.1 m): Most test cars exceed 2.0 m in width including mirrors → stay patiently on the right behind the truck.
- Error "Obstructing traffic" (unjustified slow crawl): Driving 65–70 km/h on a dry, straight country road with a 100 km/h limit, causing traffic to pile up behind you → the examiner will issue a warning; doing it twice leads to exam failure (practical tip; obstructing traffic without valid reason violates StVO).
